Settings

[Table of Contents]

The first time you run CUBE-it Zero you will be prompted with a Settings page.

These are the settings that CUBE-it Zero will use to build your cube, please read the instructions below carefully as specifying the wrong settings is likely to result in CUBE-it Zero failing. If you are unsure of your settings then please refer this page to a Database Administrator, Systems Administrator or other technical specialist. Complete the Application Settings screen as follows:

Analysis Services / Local SQL Server

If you are using the Freeware version of CUBE-it Zero without the SQL Server Connectivity pack, this is the server name of where both Analysis Services is installed and running, hence where your cubes will be built, and also the name of the SQL Server database engine that will provide the source data for your cubes.

If you have the SQL Server connectivity pack installed, this will be only the server on which Analysis services is running and therefore where your cubes will be built.

If you have purchased any other connectivity pack, for example "Microsoft Access", this will also be the server on which the working database will reside.

When a cube is built using a data source other than SQL Server, the data from the source is copied to a SQL Server working database (specified below in the Working database field)

User ID

This is a SQL Server user ID. This is the user id that will be used when connecting to the SQL Server database. If this field is not specified, your Windows user ID will be used to authenticate you with SQL Server.

NB. If you are unsure of what your setting should be here, please refer to a System Administrator, or technician for advice.

If you are using the Freeware version of CUBE-it Zero without the SQL Server Connectivity pack, this is the userid that will be used to authenticate you against the SQL Server database engine that will provide the source data for your cubes, you will need to ensure that you have been provided with the relevant access to the data in order for CUBE-it Zero to successfully build your cubes.

When a cube is built using a data source other than SQL Server, the data from the source is copied to a SQL Server working database (specified below in the Working database field), this used ID will be used to authenticate against the working database, you will need to ensure that the user ID you have specified has DBO or SA type permissions against the working database since it will be creating tables, copying and deleting data from this database. If the necessary permissions are not provided then it is likely that your cube builds will fail.

Password

This is the password to be used in conjunction with the user ID specified above, leave it blank for no password. If this and the User ID field blank are left blank, CUBE-it Zero will use your windows User ID and password for authentication.

NB. Connection to Analysis Services always uses your Windows User ID, therefore you will need to ensure that your System Administrator has provided your windows user ID with the rights to build Analysis Services Databases and Cubes.

Working Database

This is a database that CUBE-it Zero can use for temporary data. The User ID specified in the setting above must have full read/write/create/delete access to this database. It is therefore recommended that a specific database is created for this purpose and that the user be given System Admin privaledges to it.

It is actually only used if the data source for the cube is not SQL Server, in this instance the source data is copied to the SQL Working Database.

Clicking the refresh button, will populate the working database combo with a list of all of the databases available. The source of the database list is the SQL Server servername specified in the "Analysis Services / Local SQL Server" setting above.

Unhandled Error Action

In the event that an error occurs at anytime whilst using CUBE-it Zero, it will be trapped. Some error conditions have been predicted and others are not handled, in the event that an unhandled type of error occurs, this setting will define how CUBE-it Zero will respond, specifying any one of these options will have no detremental effect on CUBE-it Zero's operation:

  • Display Error Message - displays messages on screen
  • Log error to a daily log file - writes errors to a log file CubeITErrorLogyyyymmdd.log in the My Documents/CUBEitLOGS folder (where yyyy = Year, mm = Month, dd = Day)
  • Record to the Windows Application log - writes errors to the Windows Application log

Cube Build Logging

This parameter specifies whether CUBE-it Zero should write a log file during the cube building process. A new folder CUBEitLOGS is created in your My Documents folder and 1 log file for each day will be created. Log files are useful if the cube has not been built successfully as they document each stage of the build process and will document any errors.

In the event that you need to seek assistance from ASP Ltd, you may be asked to send us a log of the cube generation process, you will need to switch this option on in order to generate it.

If you need to change any of these details they are easily accessible from the Tools - Options menu.
